5W-2H Analysis

It is analytical problem solving tool which is very simple tool to help you think thorough improvement opportunities. It is also known as Seven What Analysis method. It is basically a technique of asking question for finding cause of particular problem.

5W-2H stands for What, Why, Where, When, Who, How & How much.

Type	5W-2H	Description
Subject matter	What?	What is being done? Describe the problem adequately. Can this task be eliminated?
Purpose	Why?	Why this task is necessary?
Location	Where?	Where is it being done? Where does it occur?
Sequence	When?	Timing –when did the problem start?
People	Who?	Who is doing it? Identify individuals associated with the problem
Method	How?	How is it being done? Is this the best method? Is there some other way?
Cost	How much	Quantify the problem (quantity, cost, time)
